Fish

The inspiration for this drawing has an old pedigree. The strongest and most direct was Pieter Bruegel’s 1556 pen drawing titled “Big Fish Eat Little Fish”: ‘See my son, I have known this for a long time - that the large swallow up the small.’ The moral of the allegory is clear: Man’s inhumanity to Man. Employed by Shakespeare fifty years later (Pericles, Act II, Scene I): ‘3rd Fisherman: Master I marvel how the fishes live in the sea. 1st Fisherman: Why, as men do a-land; the great ones eat up the little ones.’ In this drawing, the chained corporations, denuding the land and erecting a new Temple to Mammon, are substituted for Bruegel’s fish with human legs eating other fish.
